Slate Creek Elementary in Newton is home to the county’s severely-multiply disabled (SMD) classroom where many students may have mobility devices or other special needs. Those devices and other special needs may limit their ability to play on existing playground equipment.
We have two design options depending on the success of our fundraising campaign. Both designs are equipped with universal features, ensure inclusion, exceed traditional ADA standards, and enable our project to join the National Demonstration Site™ network under PlayCore. Our volunteer committee is hopeful that we can transform our play yard into a destination area that can serve children and families throughout the region. This playground is for ALL children so they can play together and learn from one another.
"We had a couple friends who had wheelchairs and the playground was all sand, so they couldn’t go with their wheelchair on the sand. We still played but she couldn’t do some stuff that I could do, and I didn’t think that was right."
"How we accommodate the needs of different individuals reflects on a community, and how they care for individuals and the priority they put on education and the future generations. I think this is a way for businesses to show what the community prioritizes."
"It would be great if if the school district had the money that they could just say oh of course this is a need. We want to move with it and that isn't the fiscal reality of 2023 for any public school right now. So in order to to enhance what's already happening, it takes some private support."
"I think for me the thing that feels so exciting is that the kids are recognizing with this project that everybody should have the same opportunities as everybody else and that fair isn't always equal that sometimes what is fair for one person, another person might need a little something extra to make it fair for them and I think that this is long before they've gotten hold of well, 'you're not a part of this or you don't belong here,y but inclusivity and accessibility is something that feels really natural to kids and I think that expanding on that is a bedrock of social consciousness and social care and makes me feel really excited about the seed that we're planting and these children and how they'll carry that forth into adulthood."
